I grew up in South Africa's gold mining area around Johannesburg. Two books that I read in my teens had a huge influence on my life and my writing: Exploration Fawcett, by Colonel Fawcett, and The White South (set in Antarctica) by Hammond Innes. Before coming to Australia in 1966 I explored Southern Africa and its game parks, and after arriving in Australia I explored this wonderful land, doing a six-month long 'circumnavigation' in my ten year-old Holden FE station wagon, working here and there along the 17,000 km journey. Afterwards I spent 3 month working in Hobart. This year, 2019, brings up my 50th year of living in Sydney.
I have had a life-long love-affair with Antarctica and its explorers and have been to the Antarctic Peninsula twice.
FAWQ has published 22 of my poems and articles in Scope and two in the 95th Anniversary Anthology, A lifetime of Words.
