THE REALITIES OF PUBLISHING

‘The Benefits of Self-Publishing Vs Hybrid Publishing’

Your book is a message you want to share with the world – but how do you get it out there?

The traditional publishing route is highly competitive and not for everyone so what are the alternatives?

What are the benefits of hybrid publishing? And what should you look out for?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of self-publishing?

What do these terms even mean?

Whether you already have a book, are in the throes of writing one or even thinking of it, you can’t afford to miss this informative panel discussion with experts Jennifer Lancaster and Jacki Ferro, as moderated by Sally Eberhardt.

Jennifer Lancaster is a non-fiction writing coach who helps serious authors with book coaching, copy editing, and self-publishing courses. Jennifer created the ‘Business Author Academy’ and the online course ‘Book Creation Success’.

Jacki Ferro writes and edits life stories at her business, Raw Memoirs. Through her writing and community development work, Jacki supports social justice, reconciliation and multiculturalism. Jacki regularly works with both a self-publisher and traditional publisher in Brisbane. She has been co-writing, editing or appraising since 2015.

As an author herself, Sally Eberhardt has lots of questions to ask Jennifer and Jacki!

Have YOUR questions answered – at the end of discussion, the panel will take questions from the audience.

Lucky door prizes will be drawn, then enjoy afternoon tea with time for networking.

Cost is $10.00 for FAWQ members; $15.00 for non-members.

FAWQ Gathering: Saturday August 30 2025: Poetry Workshop with L.E. Daniels 2 – 3.30 p.m. followed by lucky door prizes, afternoon tea, and networking @ Redcliffe library meeting rooms

90-Minutes of Poetry with L. E. Daniels

Precision. Economy. Emotional truth. Show more than tell. Join award-winning poet, Lauren Elise Daniels for practical lessons in strengthening voice, cohesion, theme, literary elements, and transformation in small spaces to see your prose gain more traction. For this workshop, our emphasis is less about sonnets and more about authenticity. It’s about message over rhyme. Through readings, discussions and writing exercises, we:

  • Explore structures and take our pick with nothing forced
  • Sharpen our words as we lift our messaging as we coax our words into the sublime
  • Consider transformation and surprise ourselves through lots of writing prompts
  • Escape forced rhyme while we focus on the rhythm of our thoughts
  • Bring pen and paper or a laptop to write reams

Jane Smith Historical Fiction Presentation @ Redcliffe Library
Feb 28 @ 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm

FAWQ Special Event.

Have you booked for this FAWQ Special Event yet?

Historical Writing – Fiction or Non-Fiction?

If you ever wondered what it takes to research and write an historical story, then you will be thrilled by our next FAWQ Special Event with writing presenter Jane Smith.

Jane Smith is an Australian author, editor and librarian/archivist. She loves bringing history to life through fiction and non-fiction for all ages. Her books include The Killer’s Game: Murder, Lies and Stolen Lives (about Captain Starlight); Ship of Death: The Tragedy of the ‘Emigrant’; Three Times Buried; and her latest book One Free Woman: The True Story of Convict Hannah Rigby.

Four of her books have been shortlisted or longlisted for literary awards. In 2024 she was honoured to be a Visiting Fellow of the Harry Gentle Resource Centre (Griffith University), awarded to support the research and writing of her book One Free Woman: The True Story of Convict Hannah Rigby.

Suffice to say, when it comes to researching and writing historical stories Jane has gained much experience which she has kindly agreed to share with us.

In this session, Jane will give advice on writing historical stories, whether they are fiction or non-fiction. She will provide a brief introduction to the research process, including tips on sources and how to organise your research findings.

You will learn how to approach research and writing and discover how the approach might differ depending on whether your work is fiction or non-fiction. You will also learn how to bring your historical setting and characters to life while avoiding some of the more common traps historical writers face.

This stellar presentation will be at Redcliffe Library on Saturday 28 February, 2pm-4pm.

Jane’s presentation runs for the first hour, then stay for afternoon tea and networking with other writers and readers for a while.

Tickets are $10 for FAWQ Members, $15 for non-members.
